People You Can Count On

How many friends would you say you have?  Now, be careful, I'm not talking about the amount of Facebook, Twitter or MySpace friends.  I'm not even talking about how many people you know or who you are related to.  I'm talking about real friends.  The people who actually give a damn about your well being?  If you were to ask me that same question, my answer would be a number that would fit in one hand.

Something I've come to realize over the last little while is that there are only a few people in your circle who are really there for you.  Whether you need help moving, have a flat tire, or need a place to stay, these are the select few who would be there for you for ALL of that and then some without you returning ANY KIND of favor at all.

Here's where the separation begins:  there are certainly plenty of people you know who would show up to a party you throw, there may even be many who would help you if you were in some kind of trouble or were facing a life changing problem.  But there are only a few, who would be there every step of the way.  These are the people who if you asked them, "Can you do me a favor?" would answer you by saying, "Sure what do you need?" instead of a naturally understandable, "Depends, what is it?"

These people are gems.  Treasure them.  Treat them as special as you know they would treat you.  All the rest of the people are great, too and of course should be treated well also, but make sure you know who that small circle is and be there for them without question...you never know when you'll need them in the same way.

  2. I've been giving this a lot of thought lately. Seems the older I get the more I come to rely on a select handful of people when I'm really in a bind. Back when I remember how important it was to have a number--as if my self-worth relied solely on how many people showed up to an event I invited them to. I've come to realize over the years how silly that all is. If I can't count on someone to be there in my moments of need, why do I need this person in my life?

    Very thought-provoking indeed. Great post!!!

  3. This particular topic has been weighing heavily on my mind lately. Since becoming a work-from-homer, my numbers of "real live people" in my social circle have dwindled quite a bit.

At the end of the day, I have 2 special women who are there for me through thick and thin. I love them like family.

    Great post!

  5. I would say that I have 4 really good friends and I'm proud of that. I always said if you get out of high school with one very close friend that you can keep through the years no matter where you go, then it was a sucess.

I lost most of my aquaintances when I had kids and became a SAHM and that's fine by me.

My ex-boyfriend has over 2,000 Facebook friends. What a douche!

I'm visiting via the Tea Party.

  7. Interesting thought! It always amazes me when people say they have lots of friends, because I consider friends those very few who are trustworthy enough to confide in, (that drops the number drastically) there for you when others would leave, and not in the friendship to get something out of it. You're right: those people are gems to cherish.

  8. Good post! I think as I get older it is harder to begin and sustain friendships, so it is important to treasure the ones we have.

  9. You are really right - great post. I don't know if I can even name a few really close friends that would drop everything for me. Would I do the same for anyone else? Hmmm. Lots to think about here...

  10. This post is so true. Even though I am really busy right now, I still make time for those few friends who I know will always be there for me no matter what. Thanks for the reminder!

  11. Great post. Glad I stopped by. I think that most people can count "true friends" with one hand only. They are hard to find and sometimes hard to keep but they make life a lovelier place to live.
